TikTok Influencer, Daughter of Notorious Drug Lord, Arrested in $25.8 Million Money Laundering Scheme

Authorities have arrested Michelle Jamileth Macías Penarrieta, 23, a TikTok influencer and daughter of infamous Ecuadorian narcotrafficker Adolfo 'Fito' Macias, in connection with a $25.8 million money laundering investigation. Penarrieta was arrested alongside her mother, Inda Mariela Penarrieta Tuarez, on Sunday in Sabana de Torres, Colombia.

Adolfo 'Fito' Macias, the leader of the Los Choneros gang—designated as a terrorist group by the U.S. last year—is serving a 34-year sentence for drug trafficking and murder. He escaped from an Ecuadorian prison in January 2024, prompting a state of emergency in Ecuador as gang violence surged. Fito was recaptured and extradited to the U.S., where he faces seven charges including drug and weapons trafficking in a New York court. He has pleaded not guilty.

While her father led a criminal empire, Michelle cultivated an online following as Queen Michelle, amassing an estimated 65 million followers on TikTok. She frequently showcased a lavish lifestyle, posting videos featuring large sums of cash. Her TikTok account has since been taken down. She also pursued a music career, releasing songs on YouTube, with some videos depicting her on ranches with luxury vehicles. These videos have also been removed.

Ecuadorian authorities allege that Penarrieta's opulent lifestyle was funded by illicit proceeds tied to her father's criminal activities. Investigators in Ecuador indicted 17 individuals in March as part of a money laundering case linked to Macias' finances, accusing at least four companies of moving drug money to legitimize it. Additionally, Ecuadorian authorities claim that Michelle and Inda attempted to collaborate with Colombian criminal organizations to facilitate drug and arms trafficking, as well as money laundering.

The mother and daughter had been residing in the town of Sabana de Torres for four months, following stays in Bucaramanga and Medellin, Colombia. Their location was discovered through surveillance operations before Colombian authorities made the arrests.

Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella announced the arrests on X, stating they were the result of a joint effort between Colombian and Ecuadorian authorities, along with the FBI. He affirmed that Colombia would not serve as a refuge for transnational criminal finances and that family members of criminals would be held accountable.

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa echoed this sentiment, commending the joint operation and emphasizing that the mother and daughter would face justice in Ecuador for money laundering used to finance criminal operations, including the purchase of weapons and payment of hitmen.
