Thune: Ohio Senate Race Is 'Ground Zero' for Control, Warns of Impeachment

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., declared Ohio to be "ground zero" for control of the U.S. Senate during a campaign event Tuesday night for Republican Senate nominee Jon Husted. Thune emphasized the critical nature of the race, suggesting that a Republican majority is necessary to prevent extensive investigations into former President Donald Trump and his administration.

Speaking in Lima, Ohio, Thune rallied support for Husted, arguing that a GOP Senate majority is essential. "This is the firewall in the United States Senate. It's the difference between the next two years, President Trump having to deal with Democrats in Congress, House and Senate, where all you'll be doing is investigations," Thune told attendees.

Thune's remarks alluded to earlier statements from Democratic leaders, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Rep. Gregory Meeks, who have indicated an intention to use subpoena power for investigations if their party gains a majority. Meeks previously told the Associated Press that Democrats would "act like the Congress" and use available tools for oversight.

"I tell people that the first thing the House will do, Democrats, if the House flips, is they'll impeach the president," Thune continued, referencing a potential impeachment of Trump. He added that a Republican majority in the Senate would be crucial to prevent a protracted impeachment trial, contrasting a "24-hour impeachment trial" with a potentially "24-month impeachment trial."

Thune also criticized Husted's Democratic opponent, former Sen. Sherrod Brown, characterizing him as a "rubber stamp" for Democratic leadership, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and President Joe Biden. Thune praised Husted as a "principled, hardworking, smart and solution-oriented" candidate who has a proven record of working to improve Ohio.

Thune lauded Husted's past accomplishments as lieutenant governor, citing tax cuts and efforts to secure the border. "Allowed you to keep more money in your pocket. Secured the border. We haven't had a person released into the country illegally in 17 months," Thune stated, referencing a period of low border releases.

Describing the contest as a "knife fight" and a "bare knuckles brawl," Thune urged voters to recognize the high stakes involved in the election.

Husted echoed Thune's sentiments about the closeness of the race, comparing it to the "fourth quarter of a football game." He encouraged Republican voters to remain engaged and not be discouraged by perceived intimidation tactics from the opposing side.

A recent Fox News poll indicated that Brown held a slight lead over Husted among likely Ohio voters, with 52% supporting Brown compared to 47% for Husted.
