A three-year-old girl in Florida has died from suffocation after her head became trapped in a kitchen play set, according to a medical examiner. Briella Holmes passed away on July 27, four days after the incident occurred at a babysitter's home in Meadows of Boynton Beach. The Palm Beach County Medical Examiner classified the manner of death as an accident due to probable positional asphyxia. Briella's parents, Suzi and Jason Holmes, described their daughter as "pure joy in a tiny, stubborn, independent little package" in a tribute shared with the Daily Mail.
The incident unfolded on the morning of July 23 while Briella was in the living room with her older brother, Brock. A nanny was supervising the children, but had left them in the care of her spouse, who was upstairs and periodically checking on them. The spouse discovered Briella with her head stuck in the play set and immediately began life-saving measures before first responders arrived. Police were called to the home shortly after 11 a.m. after a report that the child was unresponsive and not breathing.
Briella was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and passed away on July 27. Boynton Beach Police are investigating the death, and no charges have been filed. The specific make and brand of the toy kitchen set have not been disclosed.
In their tribute, Briella's parents also remembered her as "kind from the very beginning" and "the kind of kid who lit up a room without even trying." They added, "She adored her big brother, Brock, with her whole heart." The family has launched a fundraiser to cover funeral and memorial expenses.
Neighbors also described the Holmes family as "great." Kathy Wall, president of Safe Kids Palm Beach County, issued a warning to parents and caregivers about the importance of active supervision for children's safety.
