Three Teenagers Drowned After Car Plunged Into River, Inquest Hears

An inquest has heard that three teenagers, including a 17-year-old footballer, drowned after the car they were in crashed through a barrier and plunged into the River Wear. Jackson Duke, 17, died alongside 16-year-olds Luke Etheridge and Zara Shaw when the Audi A3 fell into the river in Sunderland city centre on September 29.

Northumbria Police were called to the Panns Bank area after reports that four occupants of the car had entered the river. One individual managed to escape the vehicle and reach safety, while the other three were unable to exit the Audi and were later discovered by divers. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation by the police.

Sunderland senior coroner David Place extended his condolences to Jackson Duke's parents, stating that the loss was "a tragic loss for the whole of the city." Provisional post-mortem examinations indicated that the cause of death was likely drowning. The inquest was adjourned until January 21.

The tragedy prompted tributes from the community. At Sunderland's Premier League match against Brighton, fans and players observed a minute of applause. Sunderland players wore black armbands during the game. The club's charity, Foundation of Light, of which Jackson Duke was a part of its scholarship programme, expressed deep sadness. A minute's silence was held by Duke's teammates and staff from the foundation ahead of their fixture.

Jackson Duke was described by his school, Castle View Enterprise Academy, as a "well-respected and popular member of our school community" who "fully embraced academic life." He achieved a full suite of GCSE qualifications, completed his Duke of Edinburgh Award, and was a "keen sportsman and valued member of our football team."

Luke Etheridge's family remembered him as a "funny and handsome" boy who was passionate about football and loved spending time with his friends and family. Zara Shaw's family described her as a "beautiful girl" with an "infectious laugh and smile," who had a "zest for life."
