Three Teenagers Die After Car Plunges Into River Wear; Driver Arrested

Three teenagers, identified as Jackson Duke, 17, Luke Etheridge, 16, and Zara Shaw, 16, have died after a car crashed through a barrier and plunged into the River Wear in Sunderland. Emergency services were called to the scene at Panns Bank near Wearmouth Bridge around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Four teenagers were reportedly inside the black Audi A3 when it entered the water. A 17-year-old passenger managed to get to safety and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Chief Superintendent Scott Cowie stated, "First and foremost, our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the teenagers who have tragically lost their lives." He added that the incident had brought "unimaginable agony and heartbreak" to the victims' loved ones, emphasizing that all three had "their whole futures ahead of them and will be hugely missed."

Police, fire services, and paramedics responded to the incident, cordoning off the area where the vehicle entered the river. Rescue boats, a helicopter, and coastguard teams were deployed in the search and recovery efforts. The vehicle was later lifted from the water by a crane, showing severe front-end damage.

Witnesses reported that the crash site is a location where young drivers sometimes engage in erratic driving. However, one witness who contacted emergency services stated there were no signs of dangerous driving immediately before the incident. This witness suggested that the driver and a passenger may have swapped seats before the car accelerated through the barrier.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the car entering the water is ongoing. Police have urged the public not to speculate about the incident on social media or within the community, citing the potential impact on the families of those involved.
