Three Teenagers Die After Car Plunges Into River Wear

The car in which three teenagers died when it plunged into the River Wear has been recovered from the water, with eyewitnesses suggesting the vehicle may have been accidentally put into the wrong gear before crashing through a metal barrier.

The bodies of two boys and one girl were recovered from the River Wear on Tuesday night after the black Audi A3 went through a barrier near Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland.

A 17-year-old boy managed to escape the wreckage and was taken to hospital. He has since been arrested by Northumbria Police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is in police custody. Officers are still working to determine who was driving the car at the time of the incident.

The teenagers were all students at Sunderland College. A college spokesman described their deaths as a “heartbreaking loss for our college community” and the wider city.

The car was lifted out of the water by a crane on Wednesday afternoon, severely damaged with its bonnet missing. The crash site is known locally for erratic driving, with skid marks visible at the scene.

One witness, a 17-year-old girl who called emergency services, stated that the car was not driving erratically before the crash. She reported seeing the driver and a passenger briefly exit the vehicle and believed they may have swapped seats before getting back in, with the passenger then driving. She described the moment the car "flew through the barrier," speculating that the driver might have tried to reverse and accidentally engaged first gear.

"We just heard this crash and saw the car go through the barrier and then the screeching noise of the bottom of the car scraping against the side of the river wall," the witness recounted. She saw the 17-year-old boy escape the car and attempt to find it in the water before climbing out and being assisted by an onlooker.

Sunderland College has expressed its deep sadness and extended condolences to the families and friends of the deceased students. Support services are being made available to students and staff affected by the tragedy.

Northumbria Police stated that no other vehicle is believed to have been involved. Chief Superintendent Scott Cowie conveyed the force's thoughts to the families of the victims and acknowledged the impact on the community, adding that the investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing.
