Three Officers Injured in County Down Lorry Crash

Three police officers sustained injuries in County Down after a lorry they were pursuing collided with their vehicle at speed. The incident occurred after officers responded to a report of a blue articulated lorry swerving on Moygannon Road in the Warrenpoint area shortly before 11:30 p.m. BST.

Officers located a lorry matching the description on the Derryleckagh Road, Newry. When signaled to stop, the lorry reportedly drove on the wrong side of the road and at speed before crashing into a police vehicle. The lorry continued towards Rostrevor before coming to a stop in the Water Street area. The driver, a 36-year-old man, fled on foot but was apprehended by officers after a short chase.

He was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink or drugs, driving while disqualified, and dangerous driving. He remains in custody. The police vehicle involved in the collision was extensively damaged, but the officers' injuries are not believed to be serious at this time. Police emphasized that officers place themselves on the front line to ensure public safety and expressed gratitude that no one, including other road users, sustained more serious injuries.
