Three Men Sentenced to Over 158 Years Each for Killing Australian Brothers and US Friend in Mexico
The conviction and sentencing mark the conclusion of a case that drew international attention and impacted Mexico's tourism.
A judge has sentenced three Mexican men to more than 158 years in prison each for the 2024 murders of two Australian brothers and their American friend. The ruling concludes a lengthy legal process that began after the bodies of Callum and Jake Robinson, and Carter Redd Rhoad, were discovered in May 2024.
The three defendants, Jesús Gerardo García, known as “el Kekas,” Irineo Francisco “N,” and Ángel Jesús “N,” were convicted of murder, robbery with violence, and vehicle theft with violence. Each received a sentence of 158 years and nine months.
The case highlighted the safety concerns for foreigners visiting Mexico, a country heavily reliant on tourism. The killings are reported to have caused a significant decrease in tourist visits, particularly among surfers, to the popular Baja California region.
Surfing Trip Turns Deadly
The Australian brothers, Callum, 33, and Jake Robinson, 30, along with their American friend Jack Carter Rhoad, 30, had traveled to Mexico in late April 2024 for a surfing trip. They decided to camp on a beach in Punta San José, approximately 50 miles from Ensenada in Baja California state.
In the early morning hours of April 28, 2024, their campsite was attacked. The victims were shot dead, and their bodies were subsequently disposed of in a deep well. Search efforts for the missing friends began, and their bodies were found on May 3, 2024.
Authorities quickly launched an investigation. On May 5, 2024, the Baja California prosecutor’s office announced the arrest of Jesús Gerardo García, identified as the primary suspect in the killings. Investigators noted that García had a prior criminal record in Ensenada, including allegations of drug dealing, unlawful entry, domestic violence, and vehicle theft.
García’s former partner, Ary Gisell Silva Raya, and two alleged accomplices, Irineo Francisco “N” and Ángel Jesús “N,” were also apprehended in connection with the case.
Prosecution’s Account and Additional Sentences
According to state prosecutor María Elena Andrade, the motive for the attack was the theft of tires from the foreigners' pickup truck. She stated that the victims resisted the robbery, leading to the fatal shootings.
Ary Gisell Silva Raya, who was found in possession of a cellphone belonging to one of the victims, entered into an abbreviated trial. In November, she was sentenced to 20 years in prison for aggravated robbery with violence and vehicle theft with violence.
The sentencing of García and his co-defendants brings a close to the criminal proceedings, although the case has left a lasting impact on the perception of safety in the region.
