Multiple mass shootings occurred across the United States on Saturday, resulting in injuries and fatalities. Incidents were reported in Lexington, Kentucky; Chicago, Illinois; and at Virginia State University.
In Lexington, Kentucky, a shooting at Charles Young Park on Saturday evening resulted in five people being shot, one of whom later died at the hospital. Gunfire erupted around 6:45 p.m. near a downtown bar district. The victims included a four-year-old, a 14-year-old, and two adults, all initially reported to have non-life-threatening injuries. The park was reportedly hosting an outdoor concert event at the time.
Lexington Director Devine Carama, who is part of the mayor's gun violence reduction program, described the scene, noting that parkgoers attempted to provide CPR and assist young victims. Footage from the scene showed people running for cover as at least 13 shots were fired.
In Chicago, a mass shooting occurred around 7:15 p.m. in the Gresham neighborhood. A car pulled up alongside a group walking on a sidewalk, and multiple occupants fired shots before driving away. Four individuals were injured, two critically. The victims included a 43-year-old man, a 34-year-old man, a 32-year-old woman, and another man of unknown age.
At Virginia State University, a shooting early Saturday morning injured five people, including a student. Chesterfield County Police arrested a 19-year-old suspect, identified as Camron Harris, who is not a student at the university. The victims' ages ranged from 17 to 23, with one sustaining critical injuries. The university had initially stated that multiple suspects were involved in the incident.
Investigations into all three shootings are ongoing. No arrests have been made in the Kentucky and Chicago incidents as of Sunday morning. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Lexington officials have used the park shooting to draw attention to gun violence.
