Three firefighters were killed and at least two others were injured on Saturday while responding to an out-of-control wildfire on the Colorado-Utah border. The blaze, known as the Snyder Mesa Fire, began as a series of small wildfires in Utah’s Grand County before spreading into Colorado and merging into a single, massive fire.

The U.S. Wildland Fire Service confirmed the fatalities and injuries, stating that the two injured first responders were transported to a local hospital. The nature of their injuries was not immediately specified.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis declared a disaster emergency in response to the wildfire. The fire has consumed an estimated 28,000 acres and remains at 0% containment, according to a statement from the governor's office.

Evacuation orders have been issued for some communities in Mesa County, Colorado, as the Colorado National Guard has been deployed to assist in wildfire suppression efforts.

"Our immediate focus is on supporting their families, friends, and fellow crewmates during this incredibly difficult time," the fire service said in a statement early Sunday. "Their bravery, dedication, and sacrifice will never be forgotten."
