Three men are scheduled to be executed by lethal injection on the same day in the United States, a confluence of events not seen in more than 16 years. Anthony Darrell Hines of Tennessee, Jeremy Williams of Alabama, and Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez of Oklahoma are all slated for execution on Thursday.
The last time three executions coincided on the same day was January 7, 2010, when Louisiana, Ohio, and Texas each put an inmate to death.
In Tennessee, 66-year-old Anthony Darrell Hines is scheduled to be executed for the 1985 murder of Catherine Jean Jenkins, a motel maid he stabbed to death. Hines was sentenced to death in 1986, with a subsequent resentencing hearing in 1989 resulting in the same punishment. His execution comes three months after another Tennessee inmate's lethal injection was called off due to difficulties inserting an IV. Hines had appealed, raising concerns about the doctor who oversaw the previous procedure, but the Tennessee Supreme Court ruled the doctor was not unqualified and that the prior incident was isolated.
In Alabama, 42-year-old Jeremy Williams is set to be executed for the 2021 rape and murder of five-year-old Kamarie Holland. Prosecutors stated Williams offered the child's mother money in exchange for sexual acts with the child and filmed the abuse. Williams, who pleaded guilty, has not appealed his sentence and requested his execution proceed. He was also a suspect in his infant daughter's 2005 death in Alaska, though charges were not filed until 2022. This would be Alabama's first execution of the year, following a halted nitrogen gas execution in June.
In Oklahoma, 70-year-old Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez faces execution for the 2003 murder of his girlfriend, Olimpia Fisher. Fisher was killed by Cuesta-Rodriguez as she was preparing to leave him. Cuesta-Rodriguez has expressed regret but did not seek clemency. The state's Pardon and Parole Board voted against recommending clemency. His attorneys cited a difficult childhood in Cuba and claimed brain damage, PTSD, and depression with psychotic episodes.
Florida executed two men on the same day last month, bringing its total to 31 executions since the start of 2025. In 2018, three executions were also scheduled for the same day, but only one proceeded after a reprieve was granted and executioners faced difficulties in another state.
