Three Dead, Four Wounded in Detroit After-Hours Shooting
Gunfire erupted early Sunday morning at a Detroit nightlife spot following an altercation, leaving three men dead and four others injured.
Three men were killed and four people were injured in a shooting that occurred at an after-hours gathering on Detroit's west side early Sunday. The incident began around 7:20 a.m. after an altercation escalated to gunfire, according to Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison.
Officers responded within four minutes of a ShotSpotter alert and a subsequent 911 call. Upon arrival, they found three deceased men. Four other individuals, two men and two women, were transported to local hospitals in private vehicles with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Ansley Harris Jr., 45, was identified as one of the victims. The other two deceased men have not yet been identified but were described as being approximately 30 years old or older. Bettison expressed condolences to the families of the victims and vowed that authorities would work relentlessly to identify and apprehend those responsible.
A neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous due to fear of retaliation, reported hearing escalating arguments, including threats, before approximately a dozen gunshots were fired in rapid succession. This neighbor also described the location as a persistent source of noise, large gatherings, and fighting, noting that residents had previously contacted the police regarding issues at the property.
Investigators are pursuing leads, and Bettison stated that the perpetrators would be identified in short order. Michigan State Police also responded to the scene.
The location of the shooting is known to Detroit police and has been the subject of previous calls for service. Bettison indicated that the property had attracted police attention multiple times this year, though he did not specify the nature of any ongoing investigations. He emphasized that regardless of any activities at the location, the violence was unacceptable.
Mayor Mary Sheffield condemned the shooting, calling it heartbreaking and pledging city support for the victims and their families. She also reiterated a commitment to cracking down on illegal after-hours operations throughout Detroit. Detroit City Council President James Tate Jr. urged the public to cooperate with the investigation and allow detectives to conduct their work unimpeded.
