Stanford University, the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) have been recognized among the world's top 10 universities in the 2027 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
Stanford tied for third place with Princeton University. Caltech secured the seventh position, and UC Berkeley tied for ninth with Yale University. This marks a significant achievement for the Golden State's higher education institutions.
The annual rankings assessed 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories. Globally, the University of Oxford claimed the top spot, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The University of Cambridge ranked fifth, Harvard University sixth, and Imperial College London eighth.
Beyond the top 10, several other California institutions were highly ranked. UCLA placed 20th globally and 12th among U.S. universities. UC San Diego followed at No. 37 worldwide, with UC Davis at No. 65. UC Santa Barbara and the University of Southern California tied at No. 71 globally, and UC Irvine completed the California contingent in the top 100 at No. 97.
Six University of California campuses and three private California colleges were among the world's top 100 institutions.
Stanford, established in 1885, is recognized for its strong ties to the technology sector and its alumni in science and innovation. Caltech, located in Pasadena, is known for its focus on science and engineering and operates NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. UC Berkeley, the oldest campus in the University of California system, has a long history of scientific research and contributions across various academic fields.
Times Higher Education's evaluation considered five key categories: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry impact. The methodology incorporates 17 performance indicators, including academic reputation, student-to-staff ratios, research income, citation impact, international collaboration, and patent data. The assessment relies on institutional data, an academic reputation survey, and research publication and citation data from Elsevier. Knowledge transfer to industry, such as research income from businesses and patents citing university work, was also factored into the rankings.
