Thousands Without Power as Storm Boelo Causes Flooding and Damage Across UK

A large-scale clean-up is in progress across parts of the United Kingdom following the impact of Storm Boelo, which brought flooding, property damage, and left around 90,000 properties without power as of Monday.

The storm, the second to affect the UK in recent days after Storm Austen, has also resulted in two fatalities. A man in his 20s died in north London when his car was struck by a falling tree on Sunday. Earlier the same day, a 60-year-old man died in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, also due to a falling tree.

Strong winds, with sustained speeds between 50-85 mph across parts of Scotland and northern England, continue to hamper recovery efforts. Leo Slade, CEO of the Energy Networks Association (ENA), described the weekend as "tough" and explained that engineers cannot safely begin repairs until the weather system passes. "Today is going to be a hive of activity in getting engineers out into the field," Slade stated on BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

While Slade emphasized the resilience of the UK's power network, which has received investment for such scenarios, he suggested a need for further discussion on increasing investment to mitigate the impacts of storms exacerbated by climate change.

Businesses have also been significantly affected. Marcus Reed, operations director at Wax Lyrical, a home fragrance manufacturer in Cumbria, reported that his factory and shop would remain without power until Tuesday evening. This two-day disruption is particularly impactful as it coincides with the pre-Christmas period, the company's busiest time of year. "This is probably the worst situation I've experienced in my time here," Reed commented, noting the loss of manufacturing and distribution capabilities.

Disruptions to travel and education have also been widespread. Several schools in Scotland have closed due to the storm's impact. Five primary schools in Aberdeenshire were shut on Monday because of power outages, and Ellon Academy closed due to storm-related damage.
