Thousands of households across Cumbria and parts of north-eastern England remain without power in the wake of Storm Boelo.
Electricity North West reported that approximately 4,500 homes were still affected, with the most severely impacted areas in Cumbria including Allerdale, Copeland, and South Lakeland. Hundreds of additional customers were also without power in Northumberland and County Durham, according to Northern Powergrid.
The storm has also caused disruptions to rail services. Northern has warned of expected delays on routes between Carlisle and Newcastle, and between Lancaster and Barrow. Services between Ashington and Newcastle are also affected, with certain stations not being served.
Residents have expressed frustration over the prolonged power outages. Derek Story of Scotby near Carlisle described the situation as "disappointing," noting that the lack of mobile signal made him feel isolated. Stephen Cawley, also from Scotby, found an unexpected upside, stating his family had resorted to "talking to each other and playing Scrabble" due to the absence of internet connectivity.
Electricity North West has set up welfare support for residents at locations including Cartmel Food Shed Takeaway, Ulverston, and Askam-in-Furness. Paul Killilea of the company stated that while the majority of homes were expected to have power restored on Monday, a smaller number might remain without electricity overnight.
"[There is] a significant amount of work to do today," Killilea said, acknowledging the scale of the restoration efforts.
Roads were also impacted by the storm. The A66, a section spanning nearly 15 miles between County Durham and Cumbria, was reopened on Sunday evening after being closed due to high winds. The Redheugh Bridge, which had been shut on Sunday afternoon, has also been reopened. The Shields Ferry service is now operating after its cancellation on Sunday.
A yellow wind warning has been issued for Cumbria, effective from 6:00 PM GMT on Monday, indicating that further adverse weather conditions may be anticipated.
