Charities are raising alarms that numerous low-income families are failing to claim financial support intended to help them purchase essential items like fresh produce and milk. The NHS Healthy Start scheme provides weekly payments to pregnant women and families with children under four, with eligible households earning less than £400 a week receiving £4.65 per week.
In some areas of the North East and Cumbria, the take-up rate for this scheme has dropped as low as 64%. Feeding Britain, a charity based in Newcastle, highlighted that increased food prices necessitate robust support systems for families with the lowest incomes.
