Thousands of students gathered in Lille's Place de la République on Tuesday to protest what they describe as under-investment in high schools. The demonstrations are part of a broader movement occurring across France.
Reporting from Lille, BBC correspondent Nick Beake observed a significant police presence near the demonstration, but noted no immediate signs of trouble. While this particular protest appeared peaceful, some similar demonstrations in France over the past week have escalated to clashes between protesters and authorities.
