Thousands of Russians have purchased homes on the Thai island of Phuket, seeking to escape conscription and shield their wealth from Russia's declining economy, according to Ian Birrell.
The migration has led to a significant Russian presence on the island, with traditional Russian amenities and businesses emerging. Shops display advertisements for legal firms and nail salons in Cyrillic, and Russian restaurants serve borscht. Traditional saunas and caviar are also available.
It is estimated that at least 60,000 Russians have moved to Phuket, an island with a registered population of 432,000. The number of visitors from Russia arriving on the island significantly surpasses those from any other nation.
The growth in the Russian expat community on the island began after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Direct charter flights to the region subsequently contributed to this build-up.
Reports indicate that some Russian expatriates are utilizing online platforms, including Telegram sites like Thai Hub, which has been associated with the sale of substances such as cocaine and crystal meth. The presence of a Russian Orthodox church, with its distinct golden domes and Slavic cross, stands as a notable landmark amidst the island's tropical landscape of palm trees and plantations.
