The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of approximately 13,514 Amana-branded window and through-the-wall air conditioners and heat pumps manufactured by Daikin Comfort Technologies Manufacturing. The recall comes as the nation grapples with a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring into the triple digits across many parts of the country.

The recalled units pose a fire and burn hazard because the heating element can remain energized even when the unit is turned off, according to the CPSC. While no injuries have been reported, the manufacturer has received one report of plastic melting inside a recalled unit. The affected products were primarily installed in hotels, apartment buildings, and commercial properties.

Consumers can identify the recalled units by checking a white label on the front edge of the base pan. The affected models have a model number beginning with PB, AH, or AE, including specific models such as PBH113J35AA, PBH093J35AA, PBH073J35AA, PBE123J35AA, PBE093J35AA, AH183J35AA, AH123J35AA, AH093J35AA, AE183J35AA, AE123J35AA, and AE093J35AA. The serial number, located under the bar code below the model number, is also used to identify affected units.

These units were manufactured in India and sold nationwide through direct sales and HVAC dealers between April and December 2025, with retail prices ranging from $850 to $1,500.

The CPSC is urging owners of the recalled units to cease using them immediately and contact Daikin for a full refund. To process the refund, consumers must cut the unit's power cord and submit photographs of the severed cord and the product's serial number via the company's recall portal.

This recall follows a recent settlement where Daikin agreed to pay an $8.5 million civil penalty to the CPSC over allegations of failing to promptly report a separate fire hazard involving its Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners (PTACs). In that instance, the company reportedly received multiple warranty claims, over a dozen fire reports, and one smoke inhalation injury report before a recall was announced in 2023. As part of the settlement, Daikin committed to enhancing its product safety compliance program and reporting procedures.
