Thousands Line Up for Nostalgic Pokémon Collectibles

Thousands of Pokémon fans across Australia woke before dawn on Friday to queue outside Kmart stores, anticipating the release of new collectible card packs and tins.

The merchandise, including $64 booster bundles and $20 mini tins, arrived just two weeks after the global launch of Pokémon's 30th Celebration expansion. The primary draw for many collectors is the possibility of finding a rare Mew card, which can be valued at up to $5,000.

Reports and images from the day showed extensive lines, with some shoppers arriving as early as 5 a.m. at retailers such as Kmart, Big W, and EB Games. The queues snaked through shopping centers as fans sought to secure the limited items.

With school holidays underway, many parents were seen joining their children in line, alongside those working from home who could take advantage of flexible schedules. One collector told the Daily Mail that they arrived before 7 a.m. to shop at Kmart and Big W, noting the presence of many families. This individual was able to purchase two sets of items due to a limit of one of each product per customer, stating the wait was "worth it."

Some long-time fans expressed a sense of nostalgia, recalling when collecting Pokémon cards was a childhood hobby rather than an activity that required extensive early morning queuing. One collector, who arrived at a Big W store at 5 a.m. and was second in line, shared frustration over missing previous releases due to online bots and scalpers, describing the current situation as "un-fun" and "humiliating."

Despite the challenges, many enthusiasts remained undeterred. One father mentioned waiting an hour on his day off, emphasizing his enjoyment of opening packs with his children. Another attendee described meeting new people and making friends while waiting in line, considering the social aspect a worthwhile experience even if they hadn't secured desired items.

The demand for these collectible cards highlights a persistent interest in the Pokémon franchise, with fans willing to invest significant time and effort to obtain sought-after items, driven by both nostalgia and the potential for rare finds.
