Authorities discovered more than 123 sets of stolen LEGOs, valued at approximately $28,290, inside an abandoned van in the California desert on Monday. A deputy from the Barstow Sheriff’s Station found the cache during a routine check of the van near National Trails Highway and Pioneer Road in Newberry Springs.
The recovered items were identified as 123 sets of the McLaren F1 LEGO model, with each box valued at $230. Agents from Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railways (BNSF) were called to the scene and confirmed the theft.
The van, which bore the logo of Sparkling ICE beverage, was stuffed with the LEGO boxes. Images from the scene showed the extent of the recovered merchandise.
No arrests have been made in connection with the discovery, and the investigation is ongoing. The incident is part of a larger concern over cargo theft along railway lines.
Last week, BNSF railway police were involved in a shootout with suspects during a robbery attempt on a train in San Bernardino County. BNSF operates an extensive rail network across 32,500 route miles in 28 states and three Canadian provinces, according to its website.
