Thousands of attendees, many clad in vibrant 1970s-inspired attire, gathered at New York City's Pier 17 rooftop deck for the annual Gimme Gimme Disco Fest. The event, which celebrates disco music, featured hits from artists like Abba, Donna Summer, and Gloria Gaynor, played by a DJ in sequined outfits. Attendees ranged from teenagers to older adults, all dancing under the stars.
The party aims to create a sense of community by bringing together people who share a love for disco music. "When you meet someone you share a love for the same music with, regardless of different backgrounds or beliefs you can have an instant connection," said Ethan Maccoby, co-founder of the event and an owner of the events company Burwoodland.
Gimme Gimme Disco Fest was launched in New York City in 2018 and has since expanded to numerous major markets across the U.S. and Canada, as well as international locations including London, Paris, Singapore, and Amsterdam. The organizers estimate that up to ten such parties occur every weekend.
Burwoodland founders Alex Badanes and Ethan Maccoby attracted the attention of investor Mark Cuban, who became a third owner of the company. "Our expectations were low, but we ended up blown away," Maccoby stated about Cuban's investment.
The event is noted for its inclusive and family-friendly atmosphere, attracting groups celebrating birthdays and families enjoying the music and outfits together. Attendees described the party as a "good time" and a way to "feel young again."
The Pier 17 location offered views of the Manhattan skyline, including the Empire State Building and the Freedom Tower. A large disco ball spun overhead, and screens displayed nostalgic videos from shows like "American Bandstand" and retro arcade games.
