Thousands Affected by Major Water Main Break in Crawley
A significant water main break has caused widespread disruptions, leaving thousands without water and leading to road closures and flooding in parts of Crawley.
A substantial water main leak on Sunday morning has impacted approximately 9,000 customers in Crawley, leading to a loss of water supply or low pressure in several areas. Southern Water, the utility company, stated that its teams are on-site working to repair the burst pipe and restore services as quickly as possible. Bottled water stations are being established for affected residents.
The areas experiencing disruptions include Woolborough Road, Holmcroft, Southgate, Tilgate, and Furnace Green. The company is investigating the cause of the burst pipe.
Major roads around the Southgate Roundabout have been closed due to the flooding. Southgate Avenue, Crawley Avenue, and a portion of the A23 are impassable. Sussex Police have urged the public to avoid the area while emergency services manage the situation.
One witness, Martin Lawrence, described the scene around 5:00 AM BST as a "massive flood" that submerged roads and flowed into an underpass. "I've never seen so much water in my life," he told BBC Radio Sussex.
