Thomas Markle Jr. and Father's Troubled Relationship Marked by Feuds, Financial Strain

The relationship between Thomas Markle and his son, Thomas Markle Jnr, has been characterized by years of disappointment, estrangement, and conflict, according to reports. Samantha Markle, Tom Jnr's older sister, described their father's repeated attempts to guide his son as ending in frustration.

Tom Jnr, now 60, dropped out of school at 14 and reportedly became more interested in partying than pursuing a career. Samantha stated that their father frequently tried to help him financially, including paying lease payments on a truck and purchasing a flower shop that ultimately failed. Tom Jnr was arrested in 2017 after allegedly pulling a gun on his girlfriend during an argument and again in 2019 on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Samantha indicated that her father grew disillusioned with Tom Jnr's behavior, including heavy drinking, and distanced himself. After Thomas Markle retired and moved to Rosarito, Mexico, he did not initially share his address with his son. However, following Meghan Markle's engagement to Prince Harry in 2017, Tom Jnr attempted to obtain his father's location to pass on to journalists.

In a significant shift, Tom Jnr became his father's primary caregiver after Thomas Markle suffered a major stroke in 2022. Tom Jnr moved from Oregon to Rosarito to provide support. Despite this, Tom Jnr claimed his father was verbally abusive and treated him like a servant. In January 2025, father and son relocated to the Philippines, moving into adjacent apartments in a tower block, intending a fresh start.

According to Samantha, there were further disputes regarding their father's health. She recalled urging her brother to take their father to the hospital for leg pain, but Tom Jnr stated their father refused to go. Thomas Markle later developed a massive blood clot, necessitating the amputation of his leg.

Earlier this summer, the father and son reportedly had a falling out when a family member alleged Tom Jnr had been taking money from his father's account. Access to his debit card was subsequently cut off. Samantha stated that once the money stopped, Tom Jnr turned on his father and began making accusations, intending to "totally destroy" him.

Conversely, Tom Jnr has asserted that his father was verbally abusive for years and used financial means to control him. He expressed regret over the time he dedicated to his father's care, stating, "I wish I could take those years back."
