Thomas Markle Jr. Accuses Father of Child Sex Images, Ignites Family Firestorm

Filipino police are investigating Thomas Markle Sr., the estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, over allegations that a significant collection of child sex images was found at his home on the tourist island of Cebu. The discovery was reportedly made by his son, Thomas Markle Jr., who claims to have found "hundreds if not thousands" of images in four cardboard boxes shipped from Mexico.

Thomas Jr. told The Sun newspaper that he made the discovery in July while searching for a mobile phone. He stated that an old device belonging to his father displayed explicit videos of young girls, and a laptop contained further images of what were described as victims appearing to be no older than ten or 11. Explicit DVDs and photographs were also allegedly found, some hidden within books about children and the film industry.

Following the alleged discovery, Thomas Jr. reported the matter to the FBI, but after three months with no apparent investigation, he turned to the Philippine police. On Friday, he transported the boxes to Cebu City police headquarters, accompanied by a reporter from The Sun. Thomas Jr., who had previously sided with his father in public disputes with Meghan, issued an apology to his half-sister, stating, "I now know I have been protecting the wrong person for the past nine years."

The Duchess of Sussex, in a statement released Friday, expressed deep distress over the news. She revealed that in 2018, the Metropolitan Police had shared details of a letter containing "troubling and disturbing allegations" against her father and had assured her they were being investigated. Consequently, she decided to restrict contact between her children and their grandfather "to protect them."

It later emerged that the letter, sent in early 2019, was from Thomas Markle Sr.'s ex-wife, Roslyn Loveless, who died in 2024. Sources suggest the letter alleged that he had admitted to visiting the Philippines and Thailand to abuse children. The Metropolitan Police are reportedly reviewing their handling of the matter.

Thomas Markle Sr., 82, has denied the allegations, telling the Mail on Sunday that he does not believe his first wife wrote the letter. He stated that the computers and phones at the center of the investigation have not been in his possession for over two years and suggested any incriminating material may have been placed there by someone else. He previously admitted to the Mail on Sunday that he had "slept with prostitutes" during trips to the Philippines when he was single, adding, "I like Asian women but that is not a crime."

Thomas Jr., 60, has a history of personal and legal troubles, including an arrest for allegedly threatening a girlfriend with a gun and a DUI charge. He also appeared on Australia's Celebrity Big Brother, where he claimed he and Meghan were once close but that fame changed her. He has reportedly been financially dependent on his father in recent years.

Samantha Markle, Meghan's half-sister and the daughter of Roslyn Loveless, has vehemently defended her father, calling her brother's allegations "disgusting" and "without merit." She accused Thomas Jr. of fabricating the claims for financial gain, suggesting the accusations surfaced after their father changed passwords to a bank account his son had access to. Samantha described her brother as a "delusional alcoholic" and claimed the devices in question were stored and inaccessible to their father for two years.

Thomas Markle Sr. moved back to the U.S. in May after suffering significant health issues, including a stroke and a blood clot that led to the amputation of his left leg. He is currently in a nursing home in Florida, supported by Samantha. His former girlfriend in the Philippines, Rio Canedo, is 46, significantly younger than him.

Meghan's father had previously been the subject of a tabloid cover story in October 2018, where he discussed his past, including claims of dabbling in cocaine and making ambiguous remarks about engaging with prostitutes in Southeast Asia. He later admitted to the Mail on Sunday that he had paid for sex in the Philippines.

The age of consent in the Philippines was raised to 16 in 2022; prior to that, it was 12, adding a complex legal layer to the investigation. The Metropolitan Police are reviewing their handling of the 2019 letter, which was reportedly sent to their "Fixated Threat Assessment Centre" rather than a child abuse unit.
