Thomas Markle Denies Reports His Ex-Wife Sent Police Letter Alleging Child Abuse
The Duchess of Sussex's estranged father claims a report that his first wife, Roslyn Loveless, sent a letter to the Metropolitan Police in 2019 detailing child abuse allegations against him is a 'set-up.'
Thomas Markle, the estranged father of the Duchess of Sussex, has denied reports that his first wife, Roslyn Loveless, sent a letter to the Metropolitan Police in 2019 containing allegations of child abuse against him. The New York Post claimed that Loveless, who was married to Markle from 1964 to 1975, was the one who alerted the police.
Markle, 82, told The Mail on Sunday that he does not believe Loveless, who died in 2024, would have written such a letter. "This shocks me. I'm not buying it," he stated. "She was a really bad alcoholic. It's really sad but she would never have written something like that letter without someone making suggestions to her."
He suggested the story might be a "set-up" and expressed a desire to see the letter himself. "Why is this all coming out now? Why is my son trying to destroy me? Why is Meghan dumping on me?" Markle questioned.
Markle faces allegations of child sex offenses, which he denies. He has confessed to paying for sex in the Philippines but vehemently denies sleeping with underage girls. Authorities in the Philippines are investigating him for allegedly hoarding child sex images.
The Metropolitan Police have faced scrutiny over why it took over seven years to act on the letter. Initially, Meghan Markle stated she learned of the allegations in 2018 from the letter passed to her by Met detectives. However, the force later clarified that they alerted her in 2019. The Duchess had stated she received assurances that the allegations were being investigated and that they were "more sickening than one could ever imagine."
Thomas Markle Jr., Meghan's half-brother, claimed he discovered child abuse images on computers his father left behind in the Philippines earlier this year and subsequently reported his father to the police. He told The Sun, "When I found this material, I was horrified and I had no option but to report my dad."
Markle has called the allegations against him "sick lies" and expressed distress over his son's claims. Their half-sister, Samantha Markle, has defended their father, accusing Thomas Markle Jr. of fabricating the allegations for financial gain.
Roslyn Loveless had previously commented on Thomas Markle's relationship with his daughter and newborn grandson Archie in May 2019, calling him an "awful father" who should not be allowed to meet his grandson. At the time, Markle dismissed her comments as "not valid."
