Newly obtained 911 dispatch audio reveals that a terrified teen hid in a closet while her friend and the friend's mother were fatally shot by a neighbor in House Springs, Missouri. The incident occurred on July 25, when 73-year-old Robert Winkelman confronted his neighbor, 38-year-old Jessica Lashly, about noise coming from her home.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Winkelman produced a gun and shot Lashly in the head. When Lashly's 17-year-old daughter, Jersey Greer, attempted to assist her mother, Winkelman shot the teen as well. Winkelman then pursued a third individual at the scene with his weapon, but did not fire. Lashly and Greer died days later from their injuries.
The dispatch audio captured a frantic call reporting that a woman was struggling to breathe, with two gunshots heard in the background. A dispatcher can be heard relaying that a victim was hiding in a closet and that her friend had been shot.
When deputies arrived at Winkelman's residence shortly after, he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators stated that Winkelman would have faced charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
Officials described the event as a "dispute between neighbors." Investigators learned that Winkelman had "ongoing frustrations" with activities at Lashly's home. He had reportedly gone to Lashly's house initially to complain about noise.
Justice Greer, the twin sister of Jersey Greer, described her sister as "the funniest person ever" and a supportive presence. She also recounted Jersey's final moments, stating, "Jersey's last moments, she was trying to save my mom. It just shows how brave she is."
Justice Greer noted that Lashly, a single mother, worked hard to provide for her twin daughters. "It was always just us three," Justice said. "It's going to be really hard because that's all I'm used to."
