Thieves Target Nvidia-Labeled Trailers, Discover 40,000 Pounds of Sand
An attempted high-tech heist in Fremont, California, turned into a low-tech surprise when thieves discovered the stolen trailers contained ballast sand instead of valuable computer chips.
Thieves who targeted two trailers at an autonomous trucking startup’s facility in Fremont, California, believing them to contain valuable Nvidia products, instead found themselves with approximately 40,000 pounds of sand.
The trailers belonged to PlusAI, an autonomous trucking startup that partners with Nvidia on self-driving systems. The Nvidia branding on the trailers, visible to the thieves, likely indicated a lucrative target. However, the cargo consisted of ballast sand, which PlusAI uses to simulate the weight of heavy freight during testing of its autonomous vehicles.
The theft was discovered by PlusAI workers on the morning of Sept. 24. The thieves had forced open the trailer locks, detached the rigs, and hauled them away with their own semi-trucks. The autonomous truck cabs themselves were left behind at the facility.
In a peculiar turn of events, the stolen trailers were later located. A friend of a PlusAI employee spotted the two trailers parked near another company’s office in Newark, California, and sent a casual message to a PlusAI executive. The trailers were found abandoned, with the sand cargo dumped nearby.
PlusAI recovered both the trailers and the sand later that afternoon. The company stated that the sand is crucial for simulating real-world weight conditions for their autonomous truck testing. The incident highlights a miscalculation by the thieves, who were apparently seeking high-value electronics but ended up with an inert and heavy commodity.
