The Victorian Bar in Santa Monica to Close After 20 Years

The Victorian, a prominent nightlife establishment in Santa Monica, California, will close its doors after two decades of operation. The closure marks the end of an era for the three-story venue, known for its role in the local social scene. The establishment announced its closure on Instagram, reflecting on its history of hosting countless events, from first dates to weddings.

The Victorian's final days will include its annual Halloween party. The venue operated Thursday through Saturday as a restaurant and transitioned into a multi-floor party space with DJs. It also featured "Salsa Thursdays" with dance lessons and open dancing.

However, the historic property is slated for a significant transformation. City records indicate that the venue will be re-branded as a private members club called "The Santamonican Club, LLC." This new establishment is planned as a "family-based recreation, events, and wellness destination serving all ages." It will feature amenities such as a new pool, spa, fitness center, restaurant, and youth facilities.

The proposed renovation is expected to take between 12 to 18 months. The project includes substantial upgrades to the nearly 123-year-old property, such as replacing the roof, HVAC systems, flooring, and the commercial kitchen, as well as overhauling the facade and landscaping. Plans also include an all-day coffee bistro and a re-imagined full-service restaurant and bar. The operator will fund these improvements without public subsidies or rent credits.

The transformation represents a shift from a late-night entertainment venue to a more family-oriented and wellness-focused space. This closure occurs during a challenging period for Los Angeles's hospitality industry, which has seen numerous closures attributed to rising costs and changing consumer habits.
