The latest episode of AMC's "The Vampire Lestat" delivered a shocking climax that left viewers questioning the fate of its titular characters, Louis and Lestat. Episode 6, titled “Montreal,” saw the apparent demise of the series' leads at the hands of Armand and Daniel Molloy, with assistance from Lestat's guitarist, Alex.
This pivotal moment occurred shortly after Louis and Lestat seemingly found a path toward reconciliation, making their decapitation all the more impactful. The episode also featured a significant confrontation where Louis and Lestat, through the witch Merrick, summoned the spirit of Claudia for a final, cathartic exchange. Instead of reconciliation, Claudia expressed her deep hatred for her "fathers."
"It was remarkable," said Jacob Anderson, who plays Louis, reflecting on the scene. "That felt cathartic — in contrast to the end of The Vampire Lestat Episode 3. That was like a catharsis for, I think, all of us in different ways. And for the characters."
Sam Reid, who portrays Lestat, echoed the sentiment, stating, "It was great. It was so much fun. I mean, we’ve just got to sit back and just enjoy it, really. I mean, it was just wonderful to see Delainey [Hayles] let rip like that."
Reid emphasized the importance of Claudia getting her final say. "Yeah, it’s a great scene and it’s so great that that Claudia does get her final say," he said. "She does get to say how it actually was and how she actually feels and that she hates the two of them. She absolutely hates them. And that is canon. I mean, that is straight out of the books."
Reid described the scene as "confronting" for both the actors and the audience, adding, "But that’s the story. And they have to live with that and they have to carry that."
However, the question of whether Louis and Lestat are truly dead remains. While their decapitation suggests an impossible survival, the season's cold open indicated Louis's presence at Lestat's estate auction, implying he is still alive. There's also a strong possibility that Lestat will find a way to survive.
The AMC series has not always followed Anne Rice's novels precisely, but the source material offers a potential explanation. In Rice's "The Vampire Lestat," Louis and Lestat are attacked by vampires, and Gabrielle intervenes to save them. It is anticipated that Gabrielle might play a similar role in the AMC adaptation. Furthermore, the show has been building towards the events of the subsequent book, "The Queen of the Damned," with hints that the ancient vampire Akasha will awaken and cause widespread chaos.
Fans can expect to see the conclusion of "The Vampire Lestat" season finale, airing next Sunday on AMC and AMC+.
