The Royal Mint Unveils Commemorative Cluedo 50p Coin

The Royal Mint has launched a new 50p coin to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the classic board game Cluedo. The coin features six of the game's most recognizable characters: Miss Scarlett, Colonel Mustard, Professor Plum, Mrs. Peacock, Reverend Green, and Mrs. White. The design, by Henry Gray, draws inspiration from the retro aesthetic of the original game, with the question "WHO, WHERE AND WITH WHAT?" prominently displayed.

A Nod to Nostalgia and Legacy

The launch event was held at The Chesterfield Hotel in Mayfair and was attended by Coronation Street and Strictly Come Dancing star Ellie Leach, who portrayed Miss Scarlett. Leach, who has also appeared in the UK tour of "Cluedo 2," expressed her excitement about embodying the iconic character. "It's such an iconic character and game that everyone knows and loves," she stated. "To be able to bring Miss Scarlett back to life is really special."

Marcia Lewis, daughter of Anthony Pratt, the game's creator, was also present. Anthony Pratt conceived the idea for Cluedo during World War II while sitting at home during the blackout. His wife, Elva, assisted with the board's design, and Waddingtons eventually published the game in 1949. Lewis shared her pride in her parents' creation becoming a significant part of British popular culture and even struck her own Cluedo coin at The Royal Mint.

Tim Mulhall, head of fandom at The Royal Mint, highlighted the coin's connection to British traditions, stating, "Every coin we create tells a story, and the Cluedo 50p brings together two much loved British traditions, collecting and storytelling."

Design and Collectible Features

Beyond the main characters, the coin incorporates hidden microtext featuring names of characters, locations, and weapons, which can be viewed with a magnifying glass or phone zoom. The packaging is also designed to echo the Cluedo board and playing pieces.

Purchasing Options and Future Value

The coins became available on The Royal Mint website on September 28. The Brilliant Uncirculated 50p is priced at £19.95, with a color version costing £29.95. Neither has a fixed mintage. For collectors seeking more substantial pieces, a colored sterling silver Proof coin is available for £99.50, with a presentation limit of 4,500 and a total mintage of 4,511. A 22-carat gold Proof coin, weighing 15.5g, is priced at £2,495 with a presentation limit of 80 and a maximum mintage of 90. Additionally, a smaller 1/40oz fine gold Proof coin, designed by Emma Noble, is priced at £195 with a presentation limit of 1,250.

Dan Hatfield, a coin expert, advises collectors to purchase editions they will enjoy owning and can afford, noting that while low mintage can be appealing, it's the combination of scarcity, demand, design, and the item's story that ultimately determines its future value. He believes this Cluedo coin is likely to be sought after for years to come, particularly due to the emotional connection many people have with the game.

Additional Offerings and Experiences

In addition to the coins, The Royal Mint is offering a limited-edition Cluedo Advent calendar for £39.95, which includes 23 milk chocolate coins and a color Brilliant Uncirculated 50p. A new online competition, "The Case of the Missing Coin," launched concurrently, with a prize draw for a gold Cluedo 50p coin worth over £2,000.

Visitors to The Royal Mint Experience in Llantrisant can strike their own Cluedo 50p coin, featuring a simplified design by Emma Noble, starting October 6. This visitor version also includes a magnifying glass to examine the hidden details.
