The Rookie Season 9 Premiere Set for Early 2027 on ABC
ABC announced the police procedural will return for its ninth season mid-season, following a dramatic cliffhanger that saw fan-favorite characters abducted.
The ABC police procedural "The Rookie" is slated to return for its ninth season in early 2027. The network has confirmed that the show, along with "High Potential" and "Will Trent," will receive midseason premieres. Official release dates have not yet been announced, but the early 2027 timeframe suggests a January return.
The upcoming season is expected to pick up directly after the cliffhanger ending of Season 8, which concluded with the abduction of Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) and Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) just moments after their engagement. Series creator Alexi Hawley indicated that the premiere will address the immediate aftermath of their kidnapping, focusing on their attempts to escape and the obstacles they face.
"We’re definitely gonna start that way, figure out where they are, and figure out how to get them back, and whatever obstacles we can put in their way on that," Hawley told Deadline. "And then seeing Tim and Lucy wherever they are, I don’t think they’re going to sit idly by and wait to be rescued."
The season nine premiere is also planned as a "supersized two-parter" that will extend the unfolding drama across multiple episodes. Hawley described the opening as "incredibly high-stakes, dramatic. It’s a love story; it’s funny and unexpected."
In addition to the return of "The Rookie," ABC is also developing a new spinoff series, "The Rookie: North," set to debut in 2027. The spinoff will star Jay Ellis as Alex Holland, a new recruit at the Pierce County Police Department, with Janet Montgomery, Karen Fukuhara, Chris Sullivan, Froy Gutierrez, Mya Lowe, and Malik Watson also in the cast. The series aims to capture a distinct feel from the original while maintaining familiar elements.
"I knew 'North' being up in the Pacific Northwest was gonna feel inherently different, but I didn’t really know how different it would feel," Hawley told Entertainment Weekly. "It makes the show feel familiar, but it’s really its own thing."
