The pursuit of travel is evolving for some individuals, shifting from a quest for experiences to a competitive endeavor of ticking off countries. Websites like NomadMania track travelers aiming to visit a significant portion of the world's approximately 200 countries, with some setting a goal of reaching 100 countries. A 'master ranking' even highlights those who claim to have visited all 193 UN-recognized nations.

This trend has led to discussions about what constitutes a legitimate country visit. A 2022 poll by NomadMania indicated that 94% of travelers do not consider an airport stopover without leaving the airport as a visit, and a majority also exclude brief excursions for meals. However, 24% of respondents believe a railway stopover counts, and disembarking from a cruise ship is generally considered necessary for a visit.

Cassie de Pecol, a record-holder for visiting all sovereign countries, suggested to Conde Nast Traveller that travel influencers often adopt this goal as a unique selling proposition to gain followers and brand deals in a crowded digital space.

For others, the motivation stems from personal promises and a desire to honor loved ones. Neil Hughes, a 61-year-old retiree, is fulfilling a promise to his late wife, Carol, by traveling extensively. He has increased his country count from 49 at the time of her funeral in April 2025 to 58 just over a year later. Hughes, who travels for about two months at a time, sees country counting as a way to keep score and is competitive about reaching his goal of visiting 60 countries by 2027. He emphasizes that this style of travel is not exclusive to young gap-year students.

Ashleigh Lawrence, a 37-year-old British-Australian World Poker Tour presenter, is another avid country counter, currently having visited 83 countries. She began with a goal of visiting 30 countries before turning 30, a target she surpassed, leading to continuous travel. Lawrence often combines trips to new destinations with visits to places she enjoys, such as adding Japan to a trip to Taiwan or combining visits to India and Sri Lanka. Her ultimate aspiration is to visit every country, with 100 countries being her immediate next goal.
