A trust fund beneficiary has detailed his descent into addiction, exacerbated by a potent drug known as "pink cocaine," a mixture that has raised concerns among European authorities due to its association with a rising number of deaths. The individual, who spent approximately £500,000 on drugs over 15 years, recounted a near-fatal drug-induced seizure that prompted his father to issue an ultimatum: rehabilitation or moving back home under parental supervision.
Describing his lowest point, the individual recalled suffering a seizure after an all-night bender involving significant quantities of pink cocaine. This unpredictable mixture, often containing ketamine and MDMA dyed pink and sometimes scented, has been linked to fatalities, including that of One Direction star Liam Payne. The seizure, which occurred after a lunch with his property magnate father, led to hospital treatment for drug poisoning. Doctors attributed the episode to the stimulant load on his nervous system, chronic dehydration, and prolonged periods without sleep or food.
His struggle with substance abuse began at age 16 during boarding school, with MDMA being his initial drug of choice. He described seeking out parties and a "grungy, debaucherous scene," contrasting with his father's ambitious, success-oriented world. At university, the lack of structure and the financial freedom afforded by his trust fund contributed to more severe problems, allowing him to recover from drug-induced hangovers without immediate consequences.
A Shifting Landscape of Addiction
In his early twenties, after moving to Berlin, his drug use continued. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic intensified feelings of apathy, with the ban on social gatherings leaving a void in his life. When restrictions eased, he returned to partying with increased intensity, using cocaine frequently. Around age 25, he attempted to mask his drug use with freelance photography work, but this quickly became a cover for extended absences.
His parents grew suspicious, leading him to promise an end to his cocaine use. However, he then turned to methamphetamine before discovering pink cocaine. Contrary to its name, the substance rarely contains actual cocaine. Its composition is typically a blend of MDMA and ketamine, but can also include amphetamines, caffeine, and in some reports, hallucinogens like mescaline and LSD, or even opioids such as fentanyl. The variability in its ingredients and proportions makes it particularly dangerous, increasing the risk of seizures, stroke, and sudden death.
Within months of discovering pink cocaine, the individual was consuming nearly a gram per day, often consuming it to avoid coming down. This led to missed work, damaged professional relationships, and strained personal connections. He observed a shift in his personality, becoming paranoid, short-tempered, and increasingly anxious and irritable, with a manic energy that would abruptly crash.
The Path to Recovery
His recovery journey began with seeking help at Paracelsus Recovery, a private psychiatric facility in Zurich. Unlike traditional detox programs, the facility offered a comprehensive, personalized recovery plan. A significant turning point was his diagnosis of ADHD, which helped explain his lifelong restlessness, apathy, and the initial appeal of stimulants. Therapy focused on addressing these underlying issues rather than merely suppressing symptoms.
More than two years into his recovery, the individual emphasizes that it is an ongoing process. Psychotherapy played a crucial role in confronting his personal issues, including a long-standing tendency to measure himself against his father's achievements. He learned that he did not need to emulate his father's ambition to find his own path. This realization allowed him to pursue interests on his own terms, leading to the establishment of his own design studio. He now maintains a structured routine and has found relief through ADHD medication, feeling more like himself than he has in 15 years.
