The Love Hypothesis Movie Filmed Across Montreal and California Campuses

The movie adaptation of the romance novel The Love Hypothesis was filmed primarily in Montreal, Canada, with additional scenes shot at the California Institute of Technology. The production took place over two months in July and August 2025.

While the story is set at Stanford University, the film used several other academic institutions to recreate the campus environment. Concordia University in Montreal served as a primary filming location, with its Loyola Campus hosting scenes shot in science labs. John Abbott College, also in Montreal, and the Macdonald Campus of McGill University were utilized for other campus shots and exteriors.

Director Claire Scanlon noted the importance of grounding the film in a realistic academic setting. "I really felt strongly that this should be a grounded, very lived-in world; that it’s not an anomaly," Scanlon told The Hollywood Reporter. "That it felt like Stanford. It was shot in Montreal. We did a day in Caltech, which I really think helped."

The film stars Lili Reinhart as PhD student Olive Smith and Tom Bateman as Dr. Adam Caslsen. It is based on the 2021 novel by Ali Hazelwood, which originated as Star Wars fanfiction in 2018. The screenplay was adapted by Sarah Rothschild, and Claire Scanlon directed. The cast also includes Rachel Marsh, Jaboukie Young-White, Nicholas Duvernay, and Arty Froushan. The Love Hypothesis is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
