The Economist has illustrated Donald Trump being overwhelmed by a massive blue wave following the Republican Party's substantial defeat in the 2026 midterm elections. The magazine's cover art depicts Trump in a wetsuit, having been thrown from his surfboard by a giant wave.

In its accompanying cover story, The Economist described the scale of the Republican loss, comparing it to a surfer caught in a "washing machine." The publication stated, "When a giant wave throws you off your board and plunges you underwater, you lose all sense of where you are. That is what befell Donald Trump and his party on November 3rd, as they were slammed by tens of millions of American voters. They have still to grasp just how much their country has changed."

The magazine characterized the election outcome as "not a normal midterm swing against a sitting president, but the biggest wave-election since the aftermath of Watergate more than 50 years ago."

Other publications also commented on the election results. Time magazine's latest issue featured Trump with an "I Voted" sticker obscuring his mouth. The New York Post, typically supportive of Trump, also used a large blue wave on its front page to represent the Republican rout.
