The California Post has announced its endorsement of Republican Steve Hilton for the position of governor. The publication cited Hilton's campaign initiatives, particularly his proposal for zero income tax on earnings up to $150,000, as key reasons for its support.
In an editorial, the newspaper detailed several of Hilton's policy positions, including his calls to lower fuel prices by reducing gas taxes and eliminating what it described as costly "green energy" policies. On housing, Hilton advocates for outward expansion, emphasizing single-family homes over high-rise developments. The publication also noted Hilton's stance on issues related to transgender rights and parental notification.
The California Post contrasted Hilton's platform with that of his opponent, Democrat Xavier Becerra. The editorial characterized Becerra as an "establishment hack" and an "empty suit," citing past criticisms from political figures and questioning his track record.
The endorsement highlighted Hilton's campaign efforts, including visits to areas like Skid Row. The publication argued that California is facing significant challenges, including high poverty and homelessness rates, an exodus of businesses, and infrastructure decay, attributing these issues to "decades of bad policy in Sacramento" and "one-party misrule."
"The stakes could not be higher. The California dream is falling apart," the editorial stated. It criticized the current administration for policies that have led to wildfires, fraud in government programs, and failing schools, concluding that Becerra offers no change from the status quo.
