The Batman: Part II Production Paused as Director Matt Reeves Steps Away for Family Matter
DC Studios confirms a temporary halt to filming for the Robert Pattinson sequel, citing personal reasons for director Matt Reeves.
Production on "The Batman: Part II" has been temporarily paused, with director Matt Reeves stepping away to focus on a family matter, DC Studios announced Monday.
"Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon," a spokesperson for DC Studios told Deadline.
The sequel to the 2022 hit "The Batman," which starred Robert Pattinson as the titular superhero, had already seen its release date shifted multiple times. It was initially slated for October 2025, then moved to October 2026, and later to October 2027. Most recently, the film's release date was pushed back to February 2028.
"The Batman" grossed over $772 million worldwide and spawned a spin-off television series featuring Colin Farrell as The Penguin.
Farrell is expected to reprise his role as The Penguin in the sequel, alongside Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon. Other reported cast members include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham, and Sebastian Koch.
DC Studios co-chief James Gunn previously commented on the prevalence of long gaps between sequels in blockbuster franchises, citing examples such as "Alien" and "Aliens" (7 years), "Incredibles" (14 years), and "Top Gun" (36 years) in a December 2024 Threads post.
Pattinson described the script for "The Batman: Part II" as "incredibly dense" and the film as a "real left turn" from its predecessor in a recent interview with Collider, expressing excitement for its ambitious nature.
