Texas Woman Sentenced to 30 Years for Fatal Shooting After Door-Holding Dispute
Keona Hampton receives a decades-long prison term for killing Cecilia Simpson following a disagreement that escalated to violence.
A Texas woman has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the murder of another woman, Cecilia Simpson, whom she fatally shot after an argument that began over a perceived slight. Keona Hampton, 23, received the sentence on October 7, 2025, for the killing that occurred in Dallas.
The incident reportedly began when Simpson confronted Hampton at a Five Below store, apparently because Hampton did not say thank you after Simpson held the door open for her. The dispute escalated when Hampton followed Simpson and her daughter to a nearby PetSmart.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit cited by the Dallas Morning News, an argument ensued inside the PetSmart. A store employee eventually removed the involved parties. As Simpson and her daughter attempted to leave in their vehicle, Hampton threw a bottle at their car. Simpson then exited her car to confront Hampton again.
The confrontation turned physical, with Simpson's daughter attempting to intervene. During the altercation, Hampton produced a firearm and shot Simpson three times. Simpson was transported to a hospital, where she later died. Hampton fled the scene but was arrested later the same day during a traffic stop.
Hampton pleaded guilty to murder on September 23, 2025, and was sentenced on the same day by Judge Tammy Kemp. She will receive credit for 303 days served since her arrest.
