A 2-year-old girl, Aryana Trevino Martinez, was found deceased in a creek approximately 500 yards from her San Antonio home on Sunday night. Her disappearance prompted an Amber Alert, which was later canceled. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed, and authorities are investigating how she left her residence.
Her body was discovered around midnight, about four hours after San Antonio police received the initial missing persons report. Uriel Ramirez, 22, found the toddler in the water. Ramirez’s mother, Anna Marie Ramirez, recalled the urgency of the situation after the Amber Alert was issued.
According to Anna Marie Ramirez, her son Uriel continued searching when she encountered difficulty due to tall weeds. Uriel spotted Martinez’s body in the creek from some rocks and immediately entered the water to retrieve her. "As soon as he looked he said he saw her body and just jumped in without hesitating and carried her and brought her to everyone," his mother recounted.
Surveillance video indicates that the 2-year-old was seen walking towards the creek. The Amber Alert was issued because investigators had a reasonable belief that an abduction had occurred and that the child was in imminent danger. The alert included details about the child, who was last seen wearing a black top and leopard-print pants.
Local residents have expressed bewilderment regarding the incident. "The first thing I thought, like everybody else, how did she get out there?" neighbor David Alcantar told WOAI. "How’s a two-year-old get out that way?"
San Antonio police have stated that the investigation is ongoing. A vigil for Martinez was scheduled for Tuesday evening.
