Texas Tech Downs No. 22 Arizona, Damaging Wildcats' Playoff Aspirations
Quarterback Thomas Castellanos led a resurgent Texas Tech offense in a 34-26 victory over Arizona, marking the Red Raiders' 13th consecutive home win.
No. 13 Texas Tech secured its 13th consecutive home victory by defeating No. 22 Arizona 34-26, dealing a significant blow to the Wildcats' College Football Playoff and Big 12 championship hopes. The win came after head coach Joey McGuire benched quarterback Will Hammond in favor of Thomas Castellanos following Texas Tech's loss to Cincinnati the previous week.
Castellanos proved instrumental in the victory, contributing effectively with both his arm and his legs. He completed 11 of 24 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 117 yards and a touchdown. This performance marked his fifth career game with over 100 rushing yards.
The Texas Tech ground game was particularly strong, accumulating 332 rushing yards in the contest. Running back J'Koby Williams led the charge with 175 yards and a touchdown. Despite the offensive success, the Red Raiders fell behind early in the game.
Arizona opened the scoring with a 35-yard field goal. Texas Tech responded with a 13-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, capped by Castellanos' 24-yard touchdown pass to tight end Terrance Carter Jr. However, Arizona quickly regained the lead with a 94-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Noah Fifita to Isaiah Mizell, making it 10-7.
Late in the second quarter, Arizona extended its lead to 17-7 with a five-yard touchdown run by running back Kedrick Reescano. Texas Tech managed to narrow the deficit to 17-10 with a field goal before halftime.
Second Half Resurgence
Texas Tech carried momentum into the second half, tying the game 17-17 on the opening drive with an eight-yard touchdown run by Castellanos. Arizona answered with a 10-play, 75-yard drive, ending in Reescano's second touchdown of the day from the 1-yard line. However, Arizona's extra-point attempt was blocked, leaving the score at 23-17.
Texas Tech capitalized on the missed extra point. On fourth-and-2 from the Arizona 27-yard line, Castellanos connected with wide receiver Kenny Johnson for a touchdown pass, putting the Red Raiders ahead 24-23 after the successful extra point. Kicker Stone Harrington added a 42-yard field goal, extending the lead to 27-23.
Despite a turnover by Texas Tech running back Cameron Dickey giving Arizona possession near midfield, the Wildcats failed to capitalize. Arizona's defense forced a punt, but Texas Tech's defense subsequently forced another three-and-out. With just over four minutes remaining, J'Koby Williams broke free for a 64-yard touchdown run, extending Texas Tech's lead to 34-23 with 17 unanswered points.
Arizona managed a late field goal, but its ensuing onside kick was unsuccessful, sealing the victory for Texas Tech.
