A former Texas middle school teacher has been sentenced to 33 years in prison for the sexual abuse of a 13-year-old student. Adriana Rullan, 30, was found guilty of multiple charges, including indecent assault and an improper relationship between an educator and a student.

The sentences for the charges, which also include indecency with a child by sexual contact, will be served concurrently. Rullan was initially arrested in December 2023. Her sentencing this week followed a trial that included testimony from six witnesses and the presentation of evidence such as photos, videos, and text messages.

During the sentencing hearing, the victim, who was 13 at the time of the abuse, testified that the experience had significantly impacted his life, leading to the loss of friends, a diminished sense of self, and severe mental health struggles, including depression and anxiety. The victim's mother also addressed the jury, describing Rullan as "sick and manipulative" and emphasizing the need to prevent her from harming other children.

Gonzalez Middle School, where Rullan taught, issued a statement following her arrest. The school district confirmed it was aware of the allegations and collaborated with the local police department in an investigation. Rullan was placed on leave upon notification of the allegations and is no longer employed by the district. The school district stated it takes swift action to investigate allegations of inappropriate conduct as required by law.
