Texas Teacher Receives Probation for Sexually Abusing Teenagers After Victim's Father Offers Support

A Texas teacher who admitted to sexual relationships with two teenage boys has received a lenient sentence of deferred probation.

Shelby Dawn Lashombe, 25, of Waco, pleaded guilty to two counts of improper relationship between an educator and student, second-degree felonies punishable by up to 20 years in prison. She received a plea deal that includes deferred probation for six years, a $1,000 fine, four weekend jail terms, and 60 days of service on the county chain gang. Under deferred probation, Lashombe will avoid a felony conviction if she complies with the terms of her sentence.

Judge Thomas West stated that he would have imposed a harsher sentence if not for the testimony of one of the victim's fathers. The father told the court that his son was "thriving," not traumatized by the relationship, and was excelling academically and in sports. He also mentioned his son's acceptance into several universities and expressed his belief that Lashombe is not a sexual predator.

However, the boy's mother, who is reportedly in a custody dispute with the father, presented a different account. She stated that her son suffers from depression and anxiety, has isolated himself from friends and family, and expressed that Lashombe's actions robbed her son of his innocence.

Lashombe was arrested in September 2025 after police received a tip that she was seen kissing a 16-year-old student. The 16-year-old, a family friend, told investigators that he had engaged in sexual relations with Lashombe multiple times over a six-month period, and that she was aware of his age. Lashombe also admitted to having sex with a second boy under 17 who attended a different school.

Lashombe's attorney argued that she did not use her authority as a teacher to coerce the students, stating that the boys initiated contact through social media. The attorney also noted that Lashombe has been diagnosed with adjustment disorders, anxiety, and depression, and experienced PTSD symptoms during her brief jail stay after her arrest.

Approximately 50 people attended Lashombe's sentencing hearing, with most present to offer support. Lashombe was a teacher at Valley Mills High School at the time of her arrest but is now employed at a furniture manufacturing company.
