A mother of five was allegedly killed in a brutal daylight attack in Del Rio, Texas, by two sisters. Caroline "Caro" Peña, 32, reportedly tried to call her best friend minutes before she was fatally attacked on Thursday.
Christina Salinas, Peña's friend of eight years, told KHOU that she received a call from Peña around 1:35 p.m. that went unanswered. Minutes later, Peña was killed. Salinas expressed anguish, stating, "I feel like if I would have answered that call, honestly I would have been there with her. It wouldn’t have gotten like that."
Siblings Kitty Mia Diaz, 21, and Amaya Cookie Diaz, 19, have been arrested and charged with murder in connection with Peña's death. A third individual, Kyandra Renee Faz, 21, was also taken into custody and charged with murder.
According to independent journalist Michael Elizondo, who spoke with The Post, Amaya Diaz appeared to be in a "happy mood" after being apprehended, with one report describing her as sticking out her tongue and "goofing off" as she was escorted to a police cruiser. Chilling video showed Kitty Diaz grinning while being taken into custody.
Salinas recounted seeing images of a bloodied Peña online shortly after the attack and recognized her by her hairstyle. "Her hair was in the same bun," Salinas said. "When I saw that, that’s all I needed to see was the back of her shirt. I knew it was her right off the bat." She described the loss as "a part of me got ripped out and that’s something I’m not going to get back." "No matter how much justice is being served, I still don’t have my friend here alive with me,"
Peña was transported to a Del Rio medical center after the attack and was later airlifted to San Antonio, where she was pronounced dead. The motive behind the attack has not yet been publicly released.
