State Rep. James Talarico has launched a campaign strategy involving dogs and puppies to criticize his opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, focusing on Paxton's past record regarding animal welfare. The Democratic challenger is seeking attack lines that resonate against Paxton, who has faced multiple scandals including impeachment proceedings and securities fraud charges.
Talarico's campaign points to a 2015 opinion issued by Paxton's office that reportedly allowed Texas A&M University to withhold documents related to its treatment of animals in laboratory research, despite numerous public records requests. At the time, the university was scrutinized following reports that approximately 100 dogs endured pain during testing and that the university acquired 474 dogs from a shelter on the same day they were euthanized. Video footage from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) resurfaced, showing dogs with muscular dystrophy in what PETA described as harsh lab conditions.
Talarico also cited Paxton's 2011 vote against legislation that would have required animal abusers to pay for the care of their abused pets. Talarico has authored and passed bipartisan legislation aimed at improving kennel safety. "In the Senate, I’ll protect puppies from corrupt politicians like Ken Paxton," Talarico stated.
The Texas Senate race has shown a narrow margin, with Talarico holding a slight lead in recent polling aggregates. Paxton, who has navigated a challenging primary, has a history of legal and ethical controversies. He was indicted on securities fraud charges in 2015, and later impeached on allegations of obstruction of justice and favoring a donor. He narrowly avoided conviction in a state Senate trial. His personal life also faced public scrutiny following revelations of infidelity.
To counter Talarico, Paxton and his allies have focused on Talarico's past statements, characterizing him as a "woke" candidate. Talarico has publicly embraced puppies at campaign events, including a recent "Puppies for Talarico" event hosted with the Austin Humane Society, framing the contrast with Paxton as a clear choice on animal welfare.
This criticism comes after Paxton initiated an investigation into Lone Star Pups last month, accusing the company of misleading consumers about veterinary care for its animals.
