Texas Senate Race Heats Up as Talarico Faces 'Blatant Corruption' Allegations

The race for the Texas Senate seat is intensifying as Republican accusations of "blatant corruption" surface against Democratic nominee James Talarico, centering on his past consulting work for a progressive firm while serving on the Texas House's Public Education Committee. Talarico's campaign has vehemently denied the allegations, calling them a "lie."

The allegations come as Talarico leads incumbent Republican Ken Paxton in recent polling, a development that could impact the GOP's slim majority in the Senate. Paxton, who faced a contentious primary, has expressed confidence that his message will resonate with voters as the campaign enters its final stretch. Talarico has continued to target Paxton, labeling him "the most corrupt politician in Texas" in advertising campaigns.

Republicans are now leveling their own accusations, characterizing Talarico's arrangement with MAYA Consulting as a "textbook pay-to-play scheme." They point to payments Talarico received from the firm, which rebranded as VIDA Collaborative, during the same years it secured millions in state contracts from the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Talarico served on the Public Education Committee, which oversees the TEA, from 2019 to 2025.

Talarico joined MAYA Consulting in 2019, stating his role would involve working with educational institutions to improve opportunities for students. According to his campaign financial disclosure, he worked with the firm until 2025. During this period, TEA records indicate the agency awarded MAYA contracts totaling over $5.2 million for initiatives related to addressing learning loss from the COVID-19 pandemic, among other priorities Talarico supported in the House.

Official disclosures show Talarico earned $83,333.40 from the consulting firm in 2025, in addition to his legislative salary. Kassi Longoria, CEO of VIDA Collaborative, confirmed Talarico's role as an "independent contractor consultant" from 2019 to 2025. She clarified that Talarico "never worked under, received compensation from, or was involved in securing any state- or federally-funded contracts." Longoria added that Talarico's relationship with VIDA was disclosed in required public financial filings.

However, Republican National Committee spokesman Zach Kraft accused Talarico of steering taxpayer funds to his consulting agency through a "scam no-show job." Kraft alleged Talarico is "one of the most morally bankrupt individuals to ever run for public office in Texas."

Campaign spokespersons for both sides have traded barbs. JT Ennis, a spokesperson for Talarico, stated that the allegations are false and that Talarico fully disclosed his relationship with MAYA, adhering to Texas House rules. Ennis also criticized Paxton's own legal troubles, including an impeachment and indictment related to bribery and investment fraud allegations.

Paxton's campaign spokeswoman, Madison Cercy, countered that Talarico is a "taxpayer-funded DEI consultant whose employer receives millions of dollars from Texans while pushing radical ideology in our schools." Fox News Digital is not aware of any evidence suggesting Talarico has misused tax dollars or that he received a commission for contracts awarded to MAYA.
