Democratic Texas Senate nominee James Talarico has been shown in a video from a climate forum stating that capitalism is an "oppressive system" tied to White supremacy and that it must be "dismantled" to achieve a better world. The remarks draw parallels to the rhetoric of Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky, who also denounced capitalism.

During his time as a state representative, Talarico addressed a 2020 climate conference hosted by the Sierra Club's Austin chapter. In his remarks, Talarico linked climate change, White supremacy, and capitalism, asserting that dismantling all three is necessary for progress. He also criticized the Texas oil and gas industry, characterizing it as a declining sector.

Talarico's statements echo sentiments often found in socialist and communist discourse. The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have publicly called for an end to capitalism, outlining a vision for a society where essential services like food, education, and healthcare are common goods. The DSA's stated objective includes a "revolutionary transformation to replace the capitalist social order based on exploitation and oppression."

The surfacing of these remarks comes as Talarico faces scrutiny. In response to the video, Talarico's campaign has stated that he is a "proud capitalist." However, some campaign staff have acknowledged the comments were "cringey."

Legal scholar Jonathan Turley, writing for Fox News, noted that such statements from candidates can be seen as attempts to appeal to a more radical base. He compared the situation to other political figures who have expressed critical views of capitalism and established institutions. Turley referenced historical figures like Trotsky, suggesting that for some, the pursuit of political ends can justify controversial means.

The discourse surrounding Talarico's comments highlights a broader debate about economic systems and political ideologies within the United States, particularly as the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding and Adam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations."
