Texas School Renames Elementary in Honor of Long-Serving Custodian

Marilyn Hampton, a beloved custodian and custodian in the Aubrey Independent School District for 39 years, was overcome with emotion when she learned a new elementary school would bear her name. Hampton, 76, had been invited to a district board meeting on October 21, believing it was to discuss a community engagement initiative.

Instead, the board of trustees announced that the district's fifth elementary school would be named Marilyn Hampton Elementary School. Trustees cited Hampton's nearly four decades of service, stating her "hands and heart embraced and cared for so many" and that "it’s only fitting that the Aubrey ISD Board of Trustees chose to put her name on a building."

"She is truly Aubrey ISD," Superintendent Shannon Saylor told WFAA, lauding Hampton as a role model and mentor to students and staff. The new school is slated to open its doors to students in August of the upcoming year.

Hampton's surprise unfolded when Saylor asked her to roll out a red carpet, a task familiar to her from her years of service. As Hampton placed the carpet, the superintendent invited her to the podium. "She may not have the official title of an educator, but she was in every meaningful sense a teacher and an educator at heart," Saylor said, according to a video shared by the school.

Upon seeing her name on the carpet, Hampton became tearful, exclaiming, "Oh my goodness. Oh God. You all are the best." Attendees then embraced her.

Hampton retired in 2022 but continued her work with the district at the Aubrey ISD Early Bird Learning Center, caring for young learners. She expressed disbelief and gratitude for the honor, stating, "Whoever thought a janitor would have a school named after them. My goodness. What an honor. It's an honor that I never thought in my lifetime I would have seen. It's not anything I could have even imagined."

Beyond her custodial duties, Saylor noted that Hampton assisted students with supplies, managed the ticket booth at football games, helped students study, and was a constant source of encouragement. "Her teaching legacy that she left behind about being kind, working hard, continue to persevere and overcome," Saylor remarked.

The school board presented Hampton with a T-shirt featuring the new school's logo. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held once the building is complete, followed by a dedication ceremony after the 2027-2028 school year begins. Hampton shared that she once felt like a failure for not attending college but realized her purpose lay in supporting children, bringing smiles to their faces. Marilyn Hampton Elementary School is scheduled to start welcoming students in August next year.
