A Texas mother of five died after a brutal, broad-daylight attack in Del Rio, an incident described by a close friend as a desperate fight for life against three assailants. Caroline Peña, 32, was allegedly stabbed multiple times on Thursday afternoon in a busy intersection.
Siblings Kitty Mia Diaz, 21, and Amaya Cookie Diaz, 19, along with their 21-year-old friend Kyandra Renee Faz, have been arrested and charged with murder. Police have set their combined bail at $15 million. Peña was transported to a local hospital and later succumbed to her injuries in San Antonio.
Zelina Ochoa, a longtime friend of Peña, recounted the events based on witness accounts and a photograph that she said was briefly posted on social media. The image, which has since been deleted, reportedly showed Peña standing despite severe injuries, with blood visible on her shirt, while the three accused attackers were positioned in front of her.
"It’s a photo of her standing up and you see the back side of her, and her shirt in the back is completely filled with blood," Ochoa told The Post. "She had just collapsed and she stood right back up. She was a fighter."
Ochoa, who met Peña when they were both teenage mothers, described Peña as a devoted mother to her five children, ranging in age from 3 to 17. Two of her children have special needs. "She was one of those people that were born to be a mom…she made it look so easy," Ochoa said. "Her life was her children."
The alleged attack occurred around 2 p.m. Thursday at a prominent intersection in Del Rio, a city on the border with Mexico. Witnesses indicated that the violence escalated rapidly with little to no verbal altercation prior to the stabbing. "It went from 0 to 100 very quickly," Ochoa recalled.
Authorities have not yet released a motive for the attack. Those who knew Peña expressed confusion, stating she was not involved in conflicts or nightlife. "Caro was not the type to go to the clubs or be involved in any type of altercation or drama or anything like that – that’s just not who she was," Ochoa stated.
Amaya Cookie Diaz, 19, was reportedly seen smiling while being taken into custody. Her older sister, Kitty Mia Diaz, 21, also faces murder charges. The third suspect is Kyandra Renee Faz, also 21.
Ochoa expressed particular anguish regarding Kitty Diaz, who reportedly has a young son of her own, questioning why one mother would allegedly inflict such harm on another. "She’s still gonna see her son grow up through the glass and Caro’s kids are only gonna have a tombstone," Ochoa said.
A GoFundMe has been established to support Peña’s children, with the fundraiser noting that two of them are autistic. As of Friday, the campaign had raised $680 toward a $7,500 goal.
