Texas Mother Accused of Stabbing Husband and Children Battled Postpartum Depression
Authorities allege Holly Flores attacked her family in the early hours of Tuesday, an incident her husband attributes to her struggle with postpartum depression.
A Texas mother is accused of stabbing her husband and their two young children in their Northlake home early Tuesday morning, an act her husband said was related to her battle with postpartum depression.
Holly Flores, 37, faces charges of attempted capital murder for allegedly attacking her husband, Justin Hommel, 34, and their 3-year-old daughter and 10-month-old son. Police were called to the residence around 4:20 a.m. after Hommel managed to fight off his wife and call for help.
When officers arrived, they found Hommel outside with the kitchen knife believed to have been used in the attack. Inside the home, they found the couple's two children, who were conscious and bleeding from puncture wounds to their upper chests. The daughter also sustained wounds to her stomach. Both children are expected to recover.
According to an arrest affidavit, Flores told officers she wanted to kill herself and no longer wanted to live. She later invoked her right to an attorney.
Hommel told investigators that he had been sleeping on the couch to support his wife, who had been struggling with postpartum depression since the birth of their son 10 months prior.
The affidavit details a confrontation that began when Hommel awoke to the sound of his wife trying to ignite a lighter. He entered the bedroom and saw Flores with a kitchen knife. A verbal altercation ensued, after which Hommel returned to sleep. He was later awakened by his children crying and was then attacked by Flores with the knife when she opened the bedroom door.
